EjcperUnce ot'an OjHce-Serker—in which there w a great deal more Truth than 1‘oetry. Mr Richard Rusty desired an otiice under the new Administration, and he went to Washington to get it. -At home Rusty was known as plain “Dick I"*® Rusty, private in the •‘Volunteer Minute Guard,” at Squam. Dick Rusty had 'iled his seven dollar coat severely bettring a torch in the Wide Awake processions; he had served as under Secretary at the town and county Con ventions, he was the very first man, in his neighbor hood, who had thought of “Abo” for President, and he determined to be “counted in,” sure, alter inaugura tion. .And so, carpet bag in hand, one fine morning re cently, he found himseif jogging up Pennsylvania avenue, in the great city of “hacks and magnificent dis tances.” Washington is a very nice place.' Dick had his “pa pers” wirli him, to-wit, a few badly spelled and worse written vouchers for his good character, and “sterling political principles, and, knowing himself (in his owa esteem J sound on the goose, upou reaching Washingtoa lie saili'd ill for tiie liitie Governmeut oifice be coveted in his native town. Having caretully enveloped his creaetitials, he started • them to the Depariment to wiiich they were addressed, and triumphaiiily sai Inmsclf down in ttie garret room of Ills hoardiijg liouse to await au auswer ti oiu the Hon. Secretary, .-ttid thus he wnitd Ou; daj', two, three, five, a week expired. But no reply by post, us he had expec.t*u! N>iw this was d singular circumsiance, (lu .Mr. Rusiy’s opinion.) and tl.e delay very uuunual in his experience. Indeed, i after a liiu ’, it came to l‘>ok very muoii like a aligut ■ towards iiim. What could it me.in? He wrote to iu- qiiire w’hy his “little iiiitier” h.id not been attended to. j !le gilt no reply to this eitlier! .Again he addressed the DepaitmL-nt upon the same su'Jcct. But he receiv ed no ansNVt-r. Tuis w.is an outrage. Whereupon, ] having waited arioiljer week, he determined, valiautly, : to “know iliC rei-oii v;hy.'' Mr. Rusty had not omitted to stir up the Hon Re- . preseniative from his district, fwho assured liim he would •■look into iiis case,”) and then he waited once I more. He found tiie county editor, too, who chanced I to be also an app icant for place, and he promised to I attend to .Mr. Ru-ty directly. And again he waited. I Still no reply. .A.ud thus four weeks run on, and Rus- I ty’s money run out. j Astonistied and exasperated, he started at length for ' the Department in person. Ho found at least six l.un- ’ dred persons there before him, all religiously bent upon an errand similar to his own. He waited six mortal hours in the great windy passage-way, where he was ■ squeezed, and elbowed, and jammed, Htui nearly suffo- j cated; but still he struggled for his “turn.” He got ' sight of the inner door just in season to see the Hon. i Secretary emerge and pas.s out to his carriage for Aowe. ' Business was over for the day, aud the mob rushed down the stairs and retired! But Richard Rusty, of Squam. was a man of busi ness; so he lollowed up his object next day, aud ttio next, and the next. .At last he succeeded iu getting inside, wiien the following colloquy ensued. “tjood morning, .Mr. Secretary,"’ says Rusty, confi dently; and he grasps the Secretary’s hand like a “Son of .Malta’’ who has passed his tweniy-third degree, “(jiood morning,” responds tlie Hon. Secret*ry blandly. “.Mr. Rusty—Richard Rusty, sir,” adds our friend. “Yes. very happy, Mr liii.sty. From Indiana*'' queries the Secretary, plily. “No sir—no.” “Oh—ah, no F’rom Illinoit, then?” "No, sir. From Squam,” s.iys Rusty, modestly. “Squam? Ves, yes. 1 reaiember Squam—.Vatne, i I thinkl' I “No, Sir. Connecticut. ’ ' “Ah. yes. Very happy. Yes. Connecticut; Rusty 1 Squam. 1 know, now.” ; .Mr. llusty, fidgets. So does the Secretary. Each is I desirous to get out oi lue other's presence as soon .is I possible. -And Mr, Rusty is duly referred, with his I pipers, to File (.'h*rk No. -1, who {he is informed) I “takes charge” of hi'documents. Rusty retires in high : glee. In his own judgment, he ha» won. I He waits again liiree days—five, a week—a. fort- I night, ljut he hears uothiug; aud then he ventures to ! wait upou .Mr. File Clerk .Vo. 21, where he inquires ! about his “little aSair.’’ No. lil has five bushels of j unopened letters on his table when Rusty enters. “Wnat u ime, sir?” he asks. ! “Rusty, sir. Richard Rusty.” Our otuce-hunter is not a little nettled to learn, as he now doea for the first time, from the File Clerk, that ■Mr's.srs. Busty. Cus:y. Dusty, Fusty, Gusty, Husty, Jiisty, Ku'ty. ;iager beer mauuficturer,) Lusty, Musty, .Nub’ty iiml Pusty, are ah b..-fore him—ou tlie list of ap- plicuiit.s; lor iiniortuiiately, our iriend from Squam is always down among the R s. But Mr. File Clerk No. 'Ji is a p.itient man. and He has been in the office .a dozen years, and will do anything to oblige Mr. Rusty.” (except to give him any lucid intormation.) .And so No. L'l refers the applicant lo .Mr. Joues.
